Xantia Mk2 Ball-joints replacement

EN

Hello,

That is “my way”(without Sinatra), of changing them ball-joints. Just for the “fun”,there was also CV joint boot.

Probably you already saw in some youtube video, or in forum people using few meters arm and some belts to do the job. Well, that might also be home solution but for sure the torque gun do much better job and there is no need of converting the wheel hub into mummy.

I did it like that: (will write for one wheel, I`ve done it on both)

- lift the car on 3 leg normal stands. Then move height lever to max low position until the car drop the rear end. After that unscrew that 12mm head bolt over the pressure regulator.

- remove the wheel

- ball joint nut remove

- lift lift the hub using the drop link as tool:

now is the part to say that you need special tool. My set cost me about 45GBP from ebay, and include xantia/406 - C5 sockets:

- with hub lift, put the torque gun under, and release jack until the hub “lie” only on the socket-tool :

Now only rotate the hub little to one dead end and push the gun. Few “shots” and we have winner:

Small hint here - with some chisel cut little that lock part of the ball joint.

Getting the joint out, fit the new one by hand until reach the end and repeat the same idea up. After, again with the chisel lock part of the ring surface. That ready, lift little the hub and fit the bolt in the A-arm. Job done.

My story continue with CV-boot fix. For that:

- 35mm socket to remove shaft`s nut. Boy, that was tight.. Some penetrating oil over the thread is wise idea..

- using shaft push bracket(really make the things easy) - around 43e:

- after shaft is out of the hub, gently move it aside and careful to not pull it out and loose the oil from the gearbox

- cut the old CV boot

- next come the pulling helper (38e)

With the airgun and that clamp, it went really easy out. Because was hard to push well the CV itself back because the secure ring, I just through it away. The ring I mean.. Anyway it will not go anywhere..

On your question - why I did not use universal silicone one and not dismantle the CV joint? Well, last one did not survive long. Let`s see how much that will.

Good luck, in case you wish to try DIY like me.
